SUMMARY:Suzuki at 90: In Conversation with Gloria Macarenko
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the Vancouver launch of Lessons From a Lifetime\, a landmark book by one of the most influential climate leaders in the world.\n\n\nAt 90 years old\, David Suzuki continues to provoke new thinking and promote more urgent action by all of us concerned about the impact of climate change — and what it portends for human survival on our one planet. Join us on Wednesday\, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. to learn Lessons From a Lifetime\, and join in an once-in-a-generation celebration of a life spent reshaping how we understand science\, justice and our relationship to the natural world. The book is co-authored by Ian Hanington. \nIn conversation with beloved CBC journalist\, Gloria Macarenko\, hear directly from Suzuki as he reflects on the experiences that shaped his extraordinary path — from surviving an internment camp to a career as a pioneering geneticist and one of North America’s most trusted voices in science communication. Throughout his working life\, Suzuki has maintained an uncompromising commitment to Indigenous sovereignty and environmental stewardship\, and has never stopped asking what responsibility looks like in practice. \nJoin us to honour the legacy of a fearless truth-teller\, whose work and ideas continue to shape the thinking of generations of activists and concerned citizens in Canada and beyond. \nThis event is hosted in partnership with the UBC Sustainability Hub and Greystone Books. All proceeds of the event go to Upstart & Crow’s non-profit climate programming\, including writer residencies\, book clubs\, grants and more. \nTickets & book sales: \nTickets are $25 per person. Each ticket includes a $10 discount on Lessons From a Lifetime\, redeemable at the event. Doors open at 7PM\, and seating is general admission. Books will be available for purchase and signing. Ticket holders may apply their $10 discount toward the purchase of one copy of the book at the event. Discounts are valid only on April 1. RSVP here. \nAbout the book: \nIn Lessons From a Lifetime\, Suzuki shares pearls of wisdom and hard-earned lessons for the next generation of activists\, alongside personal stories and heartfelt contributions from his friends and family\, his admirers\, and even his opponents\, including: \n\nMargaret Atwood\nNeil Young\nJane Fonda\nElizabeth May\nJustin Trudeau\n… and many more.\n\nIn words and photographs\, the book charts his years as a geneticist and superstar professor at the University of British Columbia; his dedication to demystifying complex science through his public broadcasting work\, especially his beloved CBC Television program\, The Nature of Things; his founding of The David Suzuki Foundation; and his unparalleled dedication to standing up for Indigenous and environmental rights\, a dedication that continues today. \nAbout the moderator: \nGloria Macarenko is an award-winning journalist and senior leader on the news team. In her time with CBC\, she has been awarded a Jack Webster Award for “Best News Reporting”\, and multiple RTNDA Awards including The Peter Gzowski Award for Best National News Information Program. Gloria has guest-hosted on The National and CBC News Now. \nMore about Upstart & Crow: \nUpstart & Crow is a not-for-profit creative studio and literary incubator that champions writers\, readers and stories\, and the role they play in shaping our lives. We develop original programs\, support artists and revel in creative projects focused on Literature In Translation\, Climate Solutions\, Poetry\, Civic Dialogue\, Community & Skills Building\, all with the aim of elevating the role of literature and storytelling in our lives. Find us on Granville Island\, Gibsons and online at upstartandcrow.com. \nLocation & accessibility: \nThis event will take place at the Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS)\, UBC\, 2260 West Mall (Room 1250). Reserved seats in the room are wheelchair accessible. This room is equipped with an automatic door opener. \nQuestions: helloupstartandcrow.com.

SUMMARY:Professional Chocolate Tasting 101: Explore Origins\, Styles\, & Profiles
DESCRIPTION:Flight of 10 chocolate samples from various makers\, styles\, and cacao origins around the world. Ethical & Nutritious.\n\n\nChocolate has entered a new era: the era of craft bean-to-bar chocolate. For many people chocolate is a sweet indulgent\, often associated with mass production and unethical sourcing of cacao. The good news is\, there are many people in the world creating a new kind of chocolate. A chocolate that can taste and feel very different\, with simple and pure ingredients\, and sourcing that goes even above Fairtrade standards. It is something that 20 years ago basically didn’t exist. \nThis tasting is hosted by Geoseph who has worked in the chocolate industry for nearly 20 years. We will explore a flight of single-origin and flavoured bars that push the boundaries of chocolate expecations. Some you may love\, some you may hate\, but we’re going to explore this new flavour territory together. \n \nIncludes: Flight of 10 samples of dark and flavoured chocolate – all of which will be nut\, gluten\, and dairy-free (vegan)* *Although I can’t guarantee no traces. Also includes a flavour wheel keepsake\, and tasting guide\, and coupon code for your first online shop purchase at scienceofchocolate.com \nTasting: Interactive\, fun\, and low-key. Come as you are (beginners very welcome). We will relax\, have music\, socialize\, and learn together. \nWe will learn about the makers and origins of your chocolate\, some information on the process of chocolate making\, and an open discussion about your analysis of the bars (there are no wrong answers here – you’re opinion is encouraged). It’s a great time for nerds who love to learn about their food. \nThe goal of this tasting is not to make you feel bad for enjoying the chocolate you enjoy\, but simply to learn about other chocolate\, other styles\, and other views. Have fun exploring ideas and flavours you may not have encountered in chocolate before. \n \nPrepare: These are important: \n\nBe hungry! Being full impedes your ability to pick up flavour. Plan your meal after the tasting if possible\, or eat something very light.\nNo perfumes/colognes/strong odours. Olfaction is key to flavour\, and this will impede yours and others to enjoy the experience.\nWear comfortable clothes.\n\n \nTickets: Purchase tickets and include cell phone number in case you need to be reached. Please ensure you can commit before purchasing. No refunds for same-day cancellations or no-shows.
