SUMMARY:My Sense of Sin(g)
DESCRIPTION:Viva Chorale\, and Vancouver jazz/folk band Illiteratty are joining forces to bring you the bespoke tale of Mr. Anxiety\, a trepidatious soul who\, despite his fear of joining in\, craves connection and community. He bravely decides to attend a community choir rehearsal one night (completely out of character!) where he has a somewhat traumatic yet transformative experience and learns for himself about the power of music to bring people together\, create community and foster an atmosphere of joy.\nThis is not your regular choral concert! The set list was co-curated and co-developed by our Artistic Director Caroni Young and Illiteratty founder and composer Earle Peach. In fact\, Earle has written new arrangements for a couple of his pieces just for this show.\nFor the price of a regular ticket you get a multi-faceted performance by our choir AND a band of super-seasoned and talented musicians all swinging together…. perhaps even inviting you to join in!\nTickets are available online through www.artspring.ca or by calling their box office.

SUMMARY:DRAMA QUEEN with JOHNNY PAYNE at MOBY'S
DESCRIPTION:Salt Spring’s synth pop quartet to perform at Moby’s for the first time\, bringing Victoria’s Johnny Payne (The Shilohs) along for the ride.\nDRAMA QUEEN\nDrama Queen in a Salt Spring Island-based synthpop band\, and the latest invocation from Knick Tomlinson formerly of “Superfeather.” The group consists of Knick on Synthesizer\, Pierre Vincent Forgues on Synthesizers\, Harley Dunn on bass guitar and Ben Frey on Drums. Effortlessly channelling the essence of the past while crafting a sound distinctly their own\, Drama Queen weaves a tapestry of neon melodies and pulsating rhythms. They transcend the ordinary and envelope listeners in a vibrant sonic journey reminiscent of an electrifying ’80s dreamscape dancehall.\nhttps://www.instagram.com/drama.queen.band/\nJOHNNY PAYNE\nDo you remember rock and roll radio? The harmonies\, the hooks\, the choruses? Johnny Payne does. Or more specifically\, he remembers that beautifully fucked up arc of let’s say ’70 to ’76\, that time when the impossibly bright lights of an entire generation’s youthful idealism gave way to the muted amber glow of adult burn-out. Payne has set out on his own as a bona fide solo singer-songwriter and Impossible Way Of Life podcaster.\nhttps://johnnypayne.ca/

SUMMARY:Singing for Fun\, Singing for Joy
DESCRIPTION:Join Mary Reher for a fall session of Singing for Fun\, Singing for Joy! This program is for both novice/reticent singers\, and those more experienced who love to sing. All ages and abilities are welcome! Rather than working toward a performance\, our aim is to have an enjoyable music experience within a small group\, and to build confidence in our voices and musicianship. Singing is every person’s birthright!\nWeekly sessions begin with a warm up. Designed to settle the nervous system\, it assists in opening the lungs and building breath capacity. The warm-ups are sometimes quirky and creative\, as we have fun while exploring vocal range and physical resonance.\nSinging in both unison and harmony can bring awesome feelings of sensory well-being\, while connecting us in community. We may experience poignant\, sacred\, uplifting\, or humorous moments\, as we sing old songs\, folk songs\, rounds\, chants\, and sometimes dances.\nRegister by September 26.\nThursdays\, 4pm to 5pm.

SUMMARY:Best of the Fests: BEETHOVEN’S NINE: ODE TO HUMANITY
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss BEETHOVEN’S NINE: ODE TO HUMANITY\, the first film in the Salt Spring Film Festival’s annual “Best of the Fests” series at ArtSpring\, at 7:30 pm on Wednesday\, November 13\, featuring a live performance by Cicela Månsson & Don Conley!\nYou don’t have to love classical music to fall in love with this uplifting and profoundly moving film about Beethoven’s Ode to Joy. Inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment\, Beethoven’s timeless Ninth Symphony was the first in history to be accompanied by words – words about love & freedom\, hope & peace – written both as a love letter to humankind and as a powerful piece of protest music.\nCanadian filmmaker Larry Weinstein travels around the world and delves into the deeply personal to explore the question: How far have we come in the past 200 years since Beethoven wrote his Ninth Symphony? Are we finally worthy of the hopes & dreams of this highly evolved and thoroughly modern artist?\nIf the horrific wars raging in Ukraine & the Middle East have you questioning why as a species we seem so intent on destroying one another\, this timely reminder of our shared humanity will leave you incandescent with hope for the future. Perhaps only music and art can save us from ourselves.\nTickets are $14 via the ArtSpring box office.

SUMMARY:Rare Earth Magnet Concert
DESCRIPTION:Originally from Greater Sudbury\, Zacharie Pelland left the city of nickel in 2016 on a whim to settle in Whitehorse as a touring and session musician. It was there that he met Amber\, a multi-instrumentalist and radio producer from Edmonton who became his wife and the co-creator of Rare-Earth Magnet. Confined to their home just outside Whitehorse in late winter 2020 due to the pandemic\, Amber and Zacharie recorded Rare-Earth Magnet’s self-titled debut album. Together\, they play all the instruments: keyboards\, electric guitar\, bass\, drums and several synthesizers. According to Zach\, the aesthetic of the project proudly ranks with the codes of science fiction: spaceships\, astronauts and expansive horizons.\nThis event is being held on the unceded\, shared traditional territories of Penelakut\, Lamalcha\, Hwitslum and other Hul’qumi’num and SENĆOŦEN speaking peoples\, Coast Salish Peoples of Galiano\, as well as the ceded territories of Tsawwassen First Nation\, on what is now known as Galiano Island. We are grateful for the generosity of Canada Council\, CRD Arts & Culture BC Arts Council &Government of BC.
