SUMMARY:Pender Island Music Ensemble with Ben McConchie – Fall Session
DESCRIPTION:Starting this September Ben McConchie will be facilitating two contemporary music ensembles at the Pender Islands school\, designed for students who want to explore\, create\, and perform music from the 1940s to today. This after-school program will run on Thursdays and is open to a range of abilities\, with participants grouped into two ensembles based on age and experience. \nThe program will focus on making music together—studying\, rehearsing\, and performing great contemporary songs\, from jazz standards and classic rock to modern pop and indie. Along the way\, students will dive into improvisation through chord–scale theory\, refine their playing with practical techniques\, and deepen their understanding through musical and lyrical analysis. \nStudents will be encouraged to bring their own creativity to the table by writing original songs for their ensembles. To support our work\, participants will have access to a wide variety of instruments from the Ptarmigan Arts instrument bank\, including drums\, guitars\, basses\, keyboards\, and more. The fall session will culminate in a special performance\, giving students the chance to share their music with friends\, family\, and the community. \nWhether you are a student who is already a confident musician or just getting started\, these ensembles are a great opportunity to learn\, collaborate\, and perform in a supportive and fun environment. We look forward to building community by creating music together.

SUMMARY:Hooking Readers One Question at a Time
DESCRIPTION:Every story that keeps you reading past your bedtime is built on questions. In this workshop\, novelist Andromeda Romano-Lax breaks down how writers can use one big question to drive a whole book\, while planting dozens of smaller ones along the way. Some questions are answered\, while others are intentionally left hanging. We’ll use a recent bestselling memoir as a working example.\nThis workshop is open to any writer working on a story (fiction or nonfiction\, any genre) at the planning\, drafting\, or revising stage. Bring pages if you have them (not required). You’ll leave with a sharper eye for the questions your own project is raising\, and whether they’re the ones you want.\nAndromeda Romano-Lax worked as a journalist and travel writer before turning to fiction. Her first novel\, The Spanish Bow\, was translated into eleven languages and chosen as a New York Times Editors’ Choice and Library Journal Best Book of the Year. Her next four novels\, The Detour\, Behave\, Plum Rains (winner of the Sunburst Award)\, and Annie and the Wolves\, reflect her diverse interest in the arts\, history\, science\, and technology\, as well as her love of travel. Andromeda has recently swerved into the world of suspense fiction with The Deepest Lake and What Boys Learn\, although she continues to write across genres. Her forthcoming book is a historical novel about Sylvia Plath.\nAndromeda has taught fiction in two MFA creative writing programs and works with novelists and memoirists as a book coach.\nSunday October 4\, 2026\n2-4pm\nLight snacks and beverages provided\nBaker Hall (215 Baker Rd)\nPay-what-you-can\, suggested $20.\nPresented by Paper Covers Rock\, Salt Spring Island’s society for readers and writers.

SUMMARY:Salute to the Sockeye
DESCRIPTION:Salute to the Sockeye is the large\, once-every-four-years celebration of the dominant sockeye run at the Adams River. The event blends cultural ceremonies\, interpretive programming\, and a big artisan market to honour the salmon and local Indigenous traditions. \nKey features to expect\nOpening ceremonies and cultural events\nTraditional welcomes and performances from Little Shuswap Lake Band and other local Secwépemc cultural programming. \nEducational interpretive program\nFisheries and Oceans Canada delivers free school programs for Grades 2 to 5 during the event\, with hands-on exhibits and guided walks. Teachers register directly with DFO. \nInterpretive cabin and walkabouts\nOn-site cabin exhibits include life-size spawning displays\, storyboards\, interactive touch screens\, and guided interpretive walks. \nArtisan and souvenir markets\nLocal makers\, First Nations artists\, and food vendors offer crafts\, art\, and regional products across the site. \nVisitor info and hours for Salute to the Sockeye\nThe festival generally opens around 8:30 AM and runs to roughly 4:30 PM on event days. Opening ceremony details list a Wednesday ceremony on October 7\, 2026 while the full dates are confirmed closer to the event. Confirm times and any visitor requirements before you go. \nPractical tips\nArrive early for quieter viewing and the best chance to join interpretive walks. Bring sturdy shoes for trails and layered clothing for variable mountain weather. Pack a small pouch for your phone to protect it from spray and mud. If you are coming with a school group\, book the DFO interpretive program in advance. \nWhy it matters\nThis celebration connects community\, culture\, and conservation. It is a rare chance to see one of North America’s largest salmon returns and to learn directly from local stewards about salmon ecology and stewardship. \nConfirm before you go\nSchedules\, registration details for school programs\, and the final 2026 dates are posted by the Adams River Salmon Society.
