Inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment\, Beethoven’s timeless Ninth Symphony was the first in history to be accompanied by words – words about love & freedom\, hope & peace – written both as a love letter to humankind and as a powerful piece of protest music.\nCanadian filmmaker Larry Weinstein travels around the world and delves into the deeply personal to explore the question: How far have we come in the past 200 years since Beethoven wrote his Ninth Symphony? Are we finally worthy of the hopes & dreams of this highly evolved and thoroughly modern artist?\nIf the horrific wars raging in Ukraine & the Middle East have you questioning why as a species we seem so intent on destroying one another\, this timely reminder of our shared humanity will leave you incandescent with hope for the future. SUMMARY:Singing for Fun\, Singing for Joy
DESCRIPTION:Join Mary Reher for a fall session of Singing for Fun\, Singing for Joy! This program is for both novice/reticent singers\, and those more experienced who love to sing. All ages and abilities are welcome! Rather than working toward a performance\, our aim is to have an enjoyable music experience within a small group\, and to build confidence in our voices and musicianship. Singing is every person’s birthright!\nWeekly sessions begin with a warm up. Designed to settle the nervous system\, it assists in opening the lungs and building breath capacity. The warm-ups are sometimes quirky and creative\, as we have fun while exploring vocal range and physical resonance.\nSinging in both unison and harmony can bring awesome feelings of sensory well-being\, while connecting us in community. We may experience poignant\, sacred\, uplifting\, or humorous moments\, as we sing old songs\, folk songs\, rounds\, chants\, and sometimes dances.\nRegister by September 26.\nThursdays\, 4pm to 5pm.

DESCRIPTION:Poetry Open Mic featuring: Lorna Crozier\nAn Officer of the Order of Canada\, Lorna Crozier has been acknowledged for her contributions to Canadian literature\, her teaching and her mentoring with five honorary doctorates\, most recently from McGill and Simon Fraser Universities. Her books have received numerous national awards\, including the Governor-General’s Award for Poetry. Her book\, What the Soul Doesn’t Want\, was nominated for the 2017 Governor General’s Award for Poetry. In 2018\, Lorna Crozier received the George Woodcock Lifetime Achievement Award. Steven Price called Through the Garden: A Love Story (with Cats)\, her latest nonfiction book\, “one of the great love stories of our time.” After That is her most recent collection of poetry.
