SUMMARY:Wonder Women! Sarah Hagen at the Bowen Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the music and stories of female composers\n\n\nWonder Women! \nCelebrating the music and stories of female composers \n“Why hurry over beautiful things? Why not linger and enjoy them?” So pondered Clara \nSchumann\, remembered as one of the finest pianists of all time. \nIn “Wonder Women!”\, pianist Sarah Hagen delves into the remarkable stories and piano music of forgotten female composers from the classical repertoire. This recital will highlight piano works by 18th and 19th century composers\, including Clara Schumann\, Cécile Chaminade\, Delphine von Schauroth\, and others. Included will be stunningly gorgeous music by Marianna Martines\, who lived in the same circles as Haydn and Mozart\, and often joined Mozart in piano duets at the musical soirées she and her sister held in their Viennese home. \n \nA note from the performer: \nI began performing this programme after purchasing a disappointingly thin volume of music by female composers about 20 years ago. After reading through the music\, I remember shutting the book and thinking to myself\, There must be more music than this\, and certainly more music of a better quality!. I simply didn’t feel the collection fairly represented the music that had been created by women during the 18th and 19th centuries. So I set off on a musical treasure hunt\, searching online\, through old collections of music\, and in libraries. I have found that good music is getting easier to find as scholars take more of an interest in researching these remarkable women. So\, I am constantly refreshing the programme! \nI am also continually fascinated by the stories of the strong women behind the music. These are the women who fought for equal pay as their male colleagues\, who insisted that they could also have a life and a career outside of the kitchen\, who chose to shockingly forgo marriage to be able to fully focus on their art. These are the trailblazers who are an invaluable part of our journey to gender equality. \nI have especially found that high school students are particularly interested in hearing these stores. Somehow hearing the music makes the stories of female strength and resilience come to life for the students in an inspiring way.

SUMMARY:The Nectar Festival on Saltspring Island
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome you to Nectar 2026 for five days of stellar music\, inspired art\, and meaningful connection as we celebrate the Summer Solstice in the best ways we know. \nNectar Festival is a curated\, immersive experience showcasing the best electronic music from across our rich region with select international artists. Our gathering unfolds among art installations\, workshops\, performances\, and creative expressions of all types. \nWe are returning to our beautiful venue on enchanted Salt Spring Island with newly expanded camping and parking\, while maintaining limited capacity to ensure the experience remains both epic and intimate. \nThis year’s theme draws inspiration from Chinese lunar mythology as we invoke the spirit of the Fire Horse—symbol of courage and our instinct for freedom. As we emerge from the Snake’s shedding of old norms and systems\, the Fire Horse charges forward into an uncertain future with fierce vitality and determination. In a time of global disruption\, we embrace and embody this energy to remember the potential of collective renewal and liberation. \nNew features of the NECTAR EXPERIENCE include:\n• The debut multimedia performance of Abstrakt Sonance & The Nectar \nOrchestra feat Kytami\, Rob Christian\, Sosita and more \n• Our new Sunset Stage at the epic viewpoint curated by Low Indigo\n\n• Expanded Tea & Elixir Lounge / Spa Sanctuary for maximum rejuvenation between dance sessions \n• More announcements coming soon! \nNectar is a Co-Creative Festival—over a quarter of attendees actively contribute to producing the experience\, and everyone brings the vibe! Together\, we are nurturing a space where our community can return home year after year. \nIf this invitation resonates\, join us June 18th–22nd on Salt Spring Island as we immerse and soak together in the Nectar of Life for five days of Music\, Art\, and Celebration! 🔥❤️🔥
