SUMMARY:Pender Island Music Ensemble with Ben McConchie – Fall Session
DESCRIPTION:Starting this September Ben McConchie will be facilitating two contemporary music ensembles at the Pender Islands school\, designed for students who want to explore\, create\, and perform music from the 1940s to today. This after-school program will run on Thursdays and is open to a range of abilities\, with participants grouped into two ensembles based on age and experience. \nThe program will focus on making music together—studying\, rehearsing\, and performing great contemporary songs\, from jazz standards and classic rock to modern pop and indie. Along the way\, students will dive into improvisation through chord–scale theory\, refine their playing with practical techniques\, and deepen their understanding through musical and lyrical analysis. \nStudents will be encouraged to bring their own creativity to the table by writing original songs for their ensembles. To support our work\, participants will have access to a wide variety of instruments from the Ptarmigan Arts instrument bank\, including drums\, guitars\, basses\, keyboards\, and more. The fall session will culminate in a special performance\, giving students the chance to share their music with friends\, family\, and the community. \nWhether you are a student who is already a confident musician or just getting started\, these ensembles are a great opportunity to learn\, collaborate\, and perform in a supportive and fun environment. We look forward to building community by creating music together.

SUMMARY:Poetry Open Mic: Our Favourite Poems

Or to bring two or three. We will take turns reading what we bring. Please keep poems to three minutes or less so we have the chance to hear a wide range of poems.\nOur regular format returns next month. SUMMARY:Our Ocean Film Fest
DESCRIPTION:Proudly Canadian\, Our Ocean Film Fest brings bold ocean films to North Vancouver to inspire and connect our community and ignite action.\n\n\nA proudly Canadian celebration of the sea.\n \nOur Ocean Film Fest is a fresh\, proudly Canadian festival created to celebrate the stories\, people\, and places that shape our connection to the ocean. Born from the momentum of Our Earth Film Festival and the incredible audiences who have embraced ocean-focused films\, this festival goes further: more films\, more community\, more support for local foundations\, and a deeper commitment to the coastline we call home. \nHere on the Pacific\, the ocean is part of who we are. Our Ocean Film Fest brings together filmmakers\, researchers\, Indigenous leaders\, conservation groups\, and ocean lovers to explore the beauty and challenges of marine life\, from the kelp forests of British Columbia to waters around the world. Every screening is paired with meaningful conversations and real ways to get involved\, so the stories continue long after the credits roll. \nRooted in Canada\, the festival highlights local talent and local action while welcoming global voices and films that help us see our coast as part of a larger\, interconnected ocean community. It’s a space where science meets storytelling\, where neighbourhoods meet nature\, and where inspiration meets impact. \nMore films. More conversations. More community. Our Ocean Film Fest isn’t just about watching movies\, it’s about bringing people together to protect the ocean that protects us. \nJoin us as we launch a festival built for our communities\, shaped by purpose\, and created with a deep love for the sea.

SUMMARY:MET OPERA: Mozart’s Così fan tutte
DESCRIPTION:The Met: Live in HD is your chance to join thousands of others in theatres and cinemas around the world\, to experience one of the world’s most famous opera companies livestream direct from New York. Here at Salt Spring\, not only do you get to experience ArtSpring’s exceptional surround sound\, but also our quiche intermissions – which have helped make Saturday morning opera a Salt Spring institution.\nIn addition to the opera itself\, there are live interviews with the stars\, and behind-the scenes live backstage footage.\nThe Met: Live in HD season kicks off with Così fan tutte – Mozart’s satirical comedy of fickle young love\, one of the composer’s most sublime creations that premiered in Vienna in 1790. Phelim McDermott’s “colorful\, inventive” (The New York Times) staging\, inspired by Coney Island in the 1950s\, sets the uproarious story at a boardwalk amusement park\, where the two pairs of lovers at the heart of the tale find themselves on one emotional—and literal—thrill ride after another.\nThe third and final collaboration between Mozart and librettist Lorenzo Da Ponte is a fascinating paradox: a frothy comedy of manners with an intensely dark take on human nature; an old story (it has antecedents in Boccaccio\, Shakespeare\, and Cervantes\, among others) with a startlingly modern tone; and a beautiful score depicting questionable behavior. Così fan tutte was only moderately successful at its premiere and remained just outside the standard repertoire for more than a century. Così still poses unique challenges\, and correspondingly unique rewards\, for the public today. Every possible impression of love—from the loftiest to the basest—is explored in this extraordinary opera.\nSoprano Federica Lombardi and mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey sing Fiordiligi and Dorabella\, opposite tenor Duke Kim and baritone Andrey Zhilikhovsky as Ferrando and Guglielmo. Bass-baritone Gerald Finley reprises his portrayal of the cynical Don Alfonso\, with soprano Ana María Martínez as the witty maid Despina.\nSung in Italian | Four hours | One intermission\nAdult $25 | Senior $20 | Youth $15

SUMMARY:Hooking Readers One Question at a Time
DESCRIPTION:Every story that keeps you reading past your bedtime is built on questions. In this workshop\, novelist Andromeda Romano-Lax breaks down how writers can use one big question to drive a whole book\, while planting dozens of smaller ones along the way. Some questions are answered\, while others are intentionally left hanging. We’ll use a recent bestselling memoir as a working example.\nThis workshop is open to any writer working on a story (fiction or nonfiction\, any genre) at the planning\, drafting\, or revising stage. Bring pages if you have them (not required). You’ll leave with a sharper eye for the questions your own project is raising\, and whether they’re the ones you want.\nAndromeda Romano-Lax worked as a journalist and travel writer before turning to fiction. Her first novel\, The Spanish Bow\, was translated into eleven languages and chosen as a New York Times Editors’ Choice and Library Journal Best Book of the Year. Her next four novels\, The Detour\, Behave\, Plum Rains (winner of the Sunburst Award)\, and Annie and the Wolves\, reflect her diverse interest in the arts\, history\, science\, and technology\, as well as her love of travel. Andromeda has recently swerved into the world of suspense fiction with The Deepest Lake and What Boys Learn\, although she continues to write across genres. Her forthcoming book is a historical novel about Sylvia Plath.\nAndromeda has taught fiction in two MFA creative writing programs and works with novelists and memoirists as a book coach.\nSunday October 4\, 2026\n2-4pm\nLight snacks and beverages provided\nBaker Hall (215 Baker Rd)\nPay-what-you-can\, suggested $20.\nPresented by Paper Covers Rock\, Salt Spring Island’s society for readers and writers.
