Setting a Holiday Table Afloat

Whether you’re at anchor in your favourite cove or tied up in Coal Harbour, the holidays are the perfect excuse to dress up your table and your mood. A festive setting aboard doesn’t need tinsel or glitter; it just needs a touch of creativity, a dash of nautical practicality, and a healthy respect for the fact that things tend to roll.

Start with the basics: pick a theme. Maybe you want Coastal Christmas with white, silver, and pale blue, or Cabin by the Sea with plaid napkins and pinecones. Keep your palette simple, two or three colours that tie into your boat’s interior. I like to pull out a few textiles from home: a linen runner, cloth napkins, or a favourite serving tray that brings a sense of tradition aboard.

Next, build your centrepiece. Candles are lovely, but on a boat, safety comes first. Use battery-powered rechargeable candles, the kind that flicker like the real thing, and tuck them into hurricane glasses or small lanterns.

Surround them with beach finds: smooth stones, bits of driftwood, shells, or sea glass. During the holidays, add natural touches like pine boughs, sprigs of cedar, or even a few bright poinsettias in small pots (wrap the bases in burlap or linen for a polished look).

Layering is key. A neutral tablecloth or woven placemats anchor the look, while a textured runner, maybe a strip of burlap, navy linen, or even an old sail remnant, adds personality. I love reall china and crystal but feel free to mix durable materials with softer ones: melamine plates that look like china, acrylic glasses that mimic crystal, and cloth napkins tied with ribbon or twine. Slip in a bit of shine with metallic napkin rings or a touch of gold flatware if you’re feeling fancy.

For a cohesive theme, here are a few ideas:

  • Coastal Noel: White tableware, silver accents, LED hurricane-candle lights, and tiny ornaments tied to napkins.

  • Driftwood & Holly: Natural wood, red napkins, cedar sprigs, and a scattering of pinecones.

Finish with small details, fresh citrus in a bowl, a few wrapped chocolates, or handwritten place cards tied with jute.

The magic is in the balance: festive but functional, elegant but effortless. On the water, less is often more. With the soft flicker of candlelight and the reflection of Christmas lights on the harbour, your table will feel like the holidays found their sea legs—nautical elegance at its finest.
