Boater’s Picks for Favourite iPad App – Part 2

first aid app

I am back with more of our favourite apps.  As a reminder from Part 1, I gathered a bunch of my boating friends, and we talked about apps.  If three different boaters mentioned an app, then it made the list; many of these apps provide a free version, although I have included the price for the full version; here goes:

There are a number of valuable first aid apps, such as Ship Captain’s Medical Guide ($4.99) by Double Dog Studios, which provides over 1,100 pages of content and provides survival medical tactics for almost any situation you can find yourself in.  The content was developed by the UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency.   Pocket First Aid & CPR ($3.99) from the American Heart Association and includes illustrations and videos.   ResQr First Aid & CPR Coach ($3.99) by Think Safe provides real-time step-by-step emergency first aid instructions that will allow you to be the rescuer in any situation.  There are also a couple of good ones for your pets, such as Pet First Aid For your Dog, Cat, Puppy or Kitten ($3.99) by Jive Media LLC .

Flipboard Personalized News Feed   (Free) by Flipboard Inc. was named Apple’s iPad App of the Year and one of TIME’s top 50 innovations of 2010.  Flipboard is a fast and organized way to flip through the news, magazines, photos, videos, and updates your friends share on Facebook, Twitter, Google Reader, LinkedIn, Flickr, and Instagram. See your social media in a magazine layout that is easy to scan and fun to read.  It really is a one-stop app for all your news and allows you more time to get on with your galley chores.

How about those evenings when you are lying on the bow of your boat looking up at the stars and possibly considering a bit of celestial navigation?  Or maybe you like to say celestial navigation?  iMariner  ($29.99) by DPFC Software is a complete toolbox for celestial navigation, including sight, fix, meridian, star finder and solar compass.  Starwalk Interactive Astronomy Guide ($4.99) by Vito Technology Inc. lets you point your iPad at the sky and see what stars, constellations, and satellites you are looking at in real-time.  I have this app, and I love it.

Another cool idea was to turn your iPad into a flashlight with Flashlight (Free) by John Haney Software fills your screen with bright light and includes fully customizable special effects like a strobe light, SOS and Halloween light.  myLite Flashlight (Free) by Doapp, Inc. is the original flashlight app with over 3.5 million downloads.  Brightest Flashlight Pro ($0.99) by myNewApps.com claims to be the brightest flashlight available.  Have you ever tried to apply lipstick while on the back deck but can’t find a mirror?  Well, this app is just crazy and is only for the iPad2 as it requires a front-facing camera.  It is called Mirror ($0.99) by i4software and provides you with a real physical mirror on your device.

Another rainy day on the boat?  Turn your kids loose with a chunk of line and one of these apps.  Knot Guide (1.99) by Winkpass Creations, Inc. is currently the #1-knot app on iTunes with 95 knots and continuous additions.  Animated Knots by Grog ($4.99) is from the creators of the web’s #1-knot site, Grogg LLC.  This is the most comprehensive teaching and reference tool for boaters and fishers. Watch as knots tie themselves in simple step-by-step photo animations.

And if the kids argue or you have to resolve an on-board dispute, may I recommend Rock, Paper, Scissors for iPad ($0.99) by Mobile Buffalo, LLC, which allows you to play against the computer or with a friend.

 Happy Apps!

I only endorse products I have used or that come highly recommended by a fellow boater.  If you purchase a product through an Amazon affiliate link, I may receive a small commission.  However, there is no extra cost to you.  I am not recommending products solely for the commission, I am doing it so I can try more cool products.
