I was recently introduced to a line of zero-waste, plastic-neutral cleaning products on Dragon’s Den called Myni. Marie-Hélène David founded this Canadian company after she realized that her sink pipe had been corroded by the toxic fumes from her cleaning products. She undertook a journey to learn about the nature of the ingredients found in traditional cleaning products.
As boaters, we have been on a similar journey to find products that can go down the sink and into the ocean without harming the inhabitants or the ecosystem. Myni products are biodegradable, non-toxic, contain no microplastics, are cruelty-free, and come in compostable packaging.
I knew that many traditional cleaning products consist primarily of water. Myni capitalizes on this as they sell their product in tablet form. You simply add it to water using your spray bottle or one purchased from their website. They have a full line of household cleaners, hand soaps, dish soaps, personal care and laundry detergent.
I have tried the all-purpose cleaner and the foaming hand soap, but my favourite product is the unscented laundry detergent. One package contains 30 tablets and costs $5, about $0.16 per load, compared to Seventh Generation, which is about $0.30 per load. I use two tablets for larger loads, so the cost is equivalent. I have tried it with smelly puppy towels and dark clothing (no white residue), and both cleaned up perfectly. Good for the environment, plus the tablets take up no space compared to the large plastic jugs (which have to be recycled and take up precious room on board both to store and in the recycle bucket).
