Every summer, there seems to be a new gadget, toy, or clever piece of gear that finds its way aboard. Some are practical. Some are completely unnecessary. The best ones manage to be both. Among these, I discovered 10 Summer Boating Products I Didn’t Know I Needed.
Here are ten boat products that caught my eye this season. These products are by no means essential for any boating enthusiast, but they sure are a lot of fun!
1. The Floating Cocktail Island
Forget pool noodles. A floating lounge island turns an ordinary anchorage into a waterfront patio. Picture a floating dock large enough for a few Adirondack chairs, a cooler, and a charcuterie board. It’s the boating equivalent of adding a back deck to your back deck.
Think of this inflatable floating dock as a portable waterfront patio for your boat. Durable enough for saltwater adventures yet easy to inflate, store, and transport, it creates the perfect platform for swimming, paddleboarding, lounging, or simply gathering friends and family on the water.
This is the one I purchased with the two chairs and the pump, and I love it! Made in Canada from Canadian Board Company.
2. The Boat-Side Beach Club
For smaller crews, an inflatable party island offers shade, cupholders, and room to stretch out without climbing into the dinghy. Think floating living room. But don’t leave it out overnight, the seals will make mash of it with their nails! Yes, from experience.
I’m not saying this inflatable island will become the most popular spot in the anchorage, but if six friends, six drinks, a cooler, and a sunshade all show up in one place, people tend to notice. Think of it as a floating living room where the dress code is swimsuits and the commute is a quick swim from the boat.
There is also a very cool one available at Wayfair!

3. Motorized Paddle Boards
The most interesting development isn’t actually a paddleboard; it’s the motor systems you can add to almost any paddleboard.
For example, the Electric Paddle Board Motor and systems allow you to convert a regular SUP into a motor-assisted cruiser. Think of it as an e-bike for the water. You still paddle when you want, but if you’re exploring a bay or fighting a current, the motor helps out.
This little electric fin is like having a very enthusiastic sea otter give your paddleboard a gentle push whenever your arms decide they've done enough exercise for the day. It won't turn your SUP into a speedboat, but it might help you spend less time paddling and more time pretending you're on a luxury cruise through the anchorage.
The industry innovator is Bixby, but even more futuristic are self-powered electric boards from SipaBoards that combine electric propulsion with self-inflation. You literally press a button, and the board inflates itself.
4. Electric Kayaks
This one feels very Missy.
The Old Town Sportsman Auto Pilot Kayak is essentially the Tesla of kayaks. It has GPS-assisted positioning and electric propulsion, so you can cruise around an anchorage without paddling. There are also pedal-electric hybrids, such as the Old Town Sportsman BigWater ePDL+ 132. Imagine launching from your yacht at Princess Louisa and quietly exploring the shoreline with a coffee in hand.
5. Rechargeable Motorized Pool Lounger
One of my favourite summer discoveries is the category of products I never knew existed but immediately wanted. Somewhere between a beach chair, a personal watercraft, and a floating patio lounger sits this gloriously unnecessary invention, a motorized pool float that answers a question nobody asked: “What if my inflatable chair had a driver’s licence?”
This motorized pool float lets you cruise around the anchorage at a blistering speed of "slow enough to keep your drink upright" while steering from the comfort of a reclining chair. With a sunshade overhead, storage for snacks and beverages, and twin motors for effortless maneuvering, it's basically a floating retirement plan with cup holders.
They also have them available at Canadian Tire!
6. Portable Air Conditioner
There was a time when sweating through a summer night was simply considered part of the experience. Fortunately, humanity also invented air conditioning, and now someone has figured out how to bring it into a tent, an RV, or even a boat cabin without requiring a mechanical engineering degree.
This portable air conditioner is for people who enjoy nature but don’t necessarily want to marinate in it overnight. Compact enough to carry with one hand and powerful enough to turn a sweltering boat cabin into a comfortable retreat, it lets you enjoy all the beauty of the outdoors while sleeping like you’re at a boutique hotel instead of a sauna with mosquitoes.
This portable air conditioner is proof that you can love the outdoors without wanting to sleep inside a slow-cooking casserole dish. Small enough to carry with one hand and powerful enough to tame a hot tent, RV, or boat cabin, it's the difference between camping and glamping.
7. Floating Golf Green
Golfers have spent years trying to make the game more relaxing, but someone finally had the courage to ask, “What if we moved the hole into the ocean?” This floating golf green turns an ordinary afternoon into a highly competitive sporting event where missed shots end with a splash, successful putts are celebrated like major championships, and retrieving golf balls from the water somehow becomes part of the entertainment. It’s exactly the kind of gloriously unnecessary invention that makes summer gatherings memorable, and gives everyone an excuse to call themselves a professional yacht golfer.
This floating golf green is perfect for anyone who thinks golf would be more fun if there were fewer sand traps and more cannonballs. Miss the shot, and your ball lands in the ocean; make the shot, and you'll spend the rest of the afternoon reminding everyone about it. And don't forget the floating balls!!
8. Stylish Waterproof Tote
Let’s be honest: most waterproof bags look like they were designed by someone whose primary goal was to survive a Greenpeace expedition, not to look stylish at the marina. The RUX waterproof tote is different. It has all the rugged practicality of those familiar roll-top dry bags, but somehow manages to look like it belongs beside a designer handbag rather than a pile of boating gear. Spacious enough for towels, jackets, groceries, paddleboard gear, or a day’s worth of boating essentials, it’s the rare waterproof bag that won’t make you choose between function and fashion. Finally, a tote that says, “Yes, I can survive a rainstorm,” while also saying, “And yes, I look good.”
We all own those practical roll-top dry bags, but this is the waterproof tote that finally got dressed for dinner. The RUX tote keeps your towels, jackets, and boating essentials dry while looking more Chanel than charter fishing trip.
Mountain Equipment Company offers a stylish option, the Odyssey Dry Tote, but it is only available in one colour called Harbour Green/Blue.
9. Rechargeable and Solar Table Lamps
Candles on boats are not a great idea. Battery-powered table lamps are a great alternative. They create instant ambience without the worry of an open flame. Think European waterfront café meets Gulf Islands sunset.
Rechargeable cordless table lamps might be the easiest way to make an aft-deck dinner feel a little more elegant and a little less like camping. With no cords to trip over and a warm glow that rivals candlelight, they're perfect for creating ambiance on your boat or the dock.
Also available in a solar option!
I bought this lamp for the boat and quickly discovered it ends up everywhere, from the aft deck and cockpit table to dock parties. Solar-powered, cordless, and available in everything from warm white to festive colours, it's one of those surprisingly useful little luxuries that makes every evening feel a bit more special.
10 Solar Powered Bluetooth Speaker
This speaker is one of those clever boating gadgets that simply makes sense on the water. Powered by innovative solar-charging technology, this rugged Bluetooth speaker keeps your music playing through long days at anchor while delivering impressive sound quality, waterproof durability, and up to 20 hours of battery life. Made from recycled materials and fully customizable through the Urbanista app, it’s a smart, eco-friendly companion for everything from cockpit cocktails to evenings on the aft deck.
This solar-powered speaker is perfect for boaters who can remember to put ice blocks in the cooler but somehow forget to charge their electronics. Leave it in the sun all day, and it happily powers your soundtrack for sunset cocktails, dockside dinners, and spontaneous aft-deck dance parties.
Final Thoughts
The best boat products aren’t always the most technical. They’re the ones that help us spend more time swimming, entertaining, exploring, and enjoying the places we visit.
After all, nobody remembers the storage bin they bought. They remember the afternoon floating beside the boat with friends, a cold drink, and nowhere in particular to be.
Is there an awesome boat product that you can’t live without? Leave me a note!!
