Why I Love It
There are certain foods I always want in the boat pantry because they solve the inevitable question: what can I make with what we already have? These dehydrated hash browns are one of them. They don’t take up freezer or refrigerator space; they’re ridiculously easy to prepare, and, most importantly, they’re actually delicious.
Why I Buy Them
I use these a lot. You add boiling water to rehydrate the potatoes, then pan-fry them until golden and crispy. For something that lives quietly in the pantry waiting for its moment, they make a remarkably good potato. What I particularly like is that they aren’t limited to breakfast. I’ll fry them with onions and top them with an egg, use them as the base for a breakfast bowl, form them into little potato patties, or serve them alongside dinner when we want potatoes without peeling, chopping, and storing fresh ones.
Why They Work on a Boat
Shelf-stable food is gold aboard. Refrigerator and freezer space are precious, particularly when we’re away for several weeks, so I love provisions that can sit in the pantry until I need them. They’re also compact, easy to prepare and versatile enough to earn the space they take up. For me, that’s the test of a good boat provision: I don’t want something aboard that only knows how to do one job.
What You Should Know
Preparation couldn’t be much simpler: rehydrate with hot water, then cook in a frying pan. I like mine with onions and enough time in the pan to get properly crispy.
Would I buy them again? I already do. Regularly. ⚓️
